For someone who is the only child of an only child I certainly have a butt load of pictures. I am trying to get things better organized (when you are pregnant it's called nesting when you are my age it's called impending death or the big dirt nap) and the only MAJOR project I have left are all these darn pictures. I've been reading articles with suggestions for sorting and organizing pictures but everything I have read seems to be directed to the type of person who has two snapshots in their jewelry box and a shoebox of photos on the top shelf of their closet. Honey, I have 6 (SIX!!) 36 gallon Rubbermaid totes of photos, letters, swimming awards, report cards, letters from WW II and well you get the picture...har har I just punned. The most recent article I read suggested keeping your box of photos next to your favorite chair and organizing while you watch TV. OK...first of all I don't need a new refrigerator and that is the only size box that would come close to holding all my photographs and I have to tell you I don't think I would like climbing in and out of that box a gazillion times while I'm trying to watch My Big Redneck Wedding. I have come to the conclusion that THE GREAT PICTURE PROJECT (yes, I do feel the need to capitalize AND bold) is going to be like trying to eat an elephant. So, if any of you have any suggestions, encouragement or even sympathy....I could use some HELP!

I know exactly what you are talking about. What I did was buy some photo boxes. I don't know if you have seen them, they come in differnent sizes and have a hinged lid with a place for a photo on top of the box and a slot on front for I.D.. I divided my pictures by time period. The boxes also have dividers you could organize more, but I didn't go that far. I did have a lot of blurry photos with no idea what was what and just started throwing out duplicates and such. Just have your boxes ready and as you go through the pictures you can put them in the correct time period box. I saved special ones out for the photo albums.
Now, aren't you glad you asked for HELP. Lol...
Thanks Pam but my only question is do you think you will need 2 or three weeks at my house to get my photos organized?
Start by sorting pictures by generations---Your Grandparents, your mothers, yours and your kids.
Like ga.farmgirl said; if they are blurry or duplicates, pitch,.... Then maybe sort by decade.....this includes letters newpapers, etc. If there are a bunch of letters from your Dad, I would include his letters (no matter who they are to) in one book with any pictures you might have. NOW are you getting started?
All I know is that there are 3 pictures of me...there may be different sizes of that picture, but I know there are only 3. Polly's box has (excuse me...Polly's boxes) have HUNDREDS of pictures in them. Mine - 3
Eddie, I beg to disagree! OK...the one SMALL box we went through when you and Polly were here did have WAY more pictures of Pol than you but we have six more tubs to go and I bet you a million dollars there are a ton of pictures of you in there. I know we have pictures of you when you were a Raisin Princess. :-) Love, MOM
