Operation Baking Gals

This will be the second time I am taking part in this effort and I think it's positively AMAZING how much a group of women can accomplish in a short amount of time. This project has nothing to do with our personal feelings about the war or politics, it's all about sending a piece of home to our soldiers one cookie at a time. The first box I sent was filled with cookies, a paperback book, a ball cap, gum, sun block, Skittles and individual Crystal Light packs. What you choose to send is entirely up to you but there is an extensive list of items on the OPERATION BAKING GALS site that our guys and girls like to receive as well as items that are not allowed to be mailed. There are also detailed instructions on what size containers work best, how to pack the cookies with the least amount of breakage and even how to fill out the paperwork. Don't panic, it is very simple....hey, I did it on the first try. Other than cookies I'm not sure what I will put in this next shipment but I was amazed at how quickly I managed to fill that box! This time I think I will choose a female soldier because I have a ton of girly type things that I can tuck in with the cookies. This is a perfect project to share with your children or grandchildren so please take a minute and go visit with my friend Susan at http://www.operationbakinggals.blogspot.com/ and tell her Jan from Myrtle Beach sent you!

Thank you for posting this.

On behalf of all veterans, let me say Thank You for all that you and those like you do to boost the morale and show your support for those in uniform.

I served in the Navy and was stationed overseas. It was the things like this that kept me and my shipmates going. You'd really be surprised how many people never heard from their own families and would get all misty-eyed when mail call came and there was nothing for them.

Wonderful gestures such as these really mean a lot to those who are serving, especially those who otherwise wouldn't be hearing from anybody at all.

Your sailors, marines, airmen and soldiers love you for it... and we thank you.

Jan! I want to play too! What team are you on? We can get the Danville Baking Gals to represent!

Tenn..thank you so much for your kind comment. My oldest daughter was in the Air Force and was also overseas. Anytime I sent her a package I always tried to make sure there was plenty to share and I never understood the families who wouldn't take the time to stay in touch with their child.

Jennifer..I just now signed up on Team Lauer and since this is my second time to bake I plan to volunteer to be a hostess next month.

Great idea! My husband and I each had a sibling in Saudi Arabia during the 1st Gulf war, and whenever a package like this would come from home, it was a MAJOR event. As tennzen says, it really DOES keep folks going!

This is awesome. I have cousins who have been overseas and I know they loved receiving packages from strangers - almost as much as the ones they got from family, I think.
